Motivating and Demotivating Factors in English Writing (A Study on English Education Department Students)

Abstract


 The objective of the study in identifying the English education department students’ motivating and demotivating factors in English writing. The participants of this study were 64 English Education Department students of UIN Raden Intan Lampung in the academic year of 2023/2024.the researcher employed the descriptive quantitative method and utilized questionnaires to gather the data. The analysis revealed that the significance of intrinsic motivation in language learning, specifically in English writing. The research indicates that individuals who find it challenging to express their true selves or have ego issues may experience lower levels of motivation in enhancing their English writing skills. Educators and language instructors should consider addressing this vulnerability and provide support to help students feel more comfortable and confident in expressing themselves through writing in English. The study also reveals that the potential for career advancement is a significant external motivating factor for many individuals to improve their English skills. The text also highlights demotivating factors that students face while writing in English, with the belief that writing in English is out of reach being the highest demotivating factor. Negative self-talk is the weakest demotivating factor.
