Darwissyah Irwan Duhir, Fithrah Auliya Ansar

Abstract

: This study presents a review of recent studies on ESL teaching in Indonesia by analysing a collection of journal articles from 2015 to 2023. The review covers various aspects of English as a second language (ESL) education, ranging from teaching methods, challenges, and innovations. A selection of 30 peer-reviewed articles is chosen and analysed based on a set of criteria for inclusion and exclusion. It is shown in this study, that communicative and Student-centred approaches have become increasingly evident in Indonesian ESL classrooms. Some pedagogical methods like communicative language teaching (CLT) and Project-based learning (PBL) have been widely embraced. The study highlights the increasing integration of technology in ESL pedagogies, as well as the important development of teachers' abilities to determine an appropriate method suitable for the students' context and culture. Another aspect that is recently intriguing, examines the impact of COVID-19 pandemic to the ESL education in Indonesia, and how this leads to the ESL education transition to online and hybrid learning methods. The research presents recommendations for further study in this field, while it also deals with the implications for ESL teachers and policy-makers in Indonesia.
