Fanaticism and Religious Moderation in the Short Story Robohnya Surau Kami

Abstract


This research aims to examine the representative of religious fanaticism and its impacts in the short story "Robohnya Surau Kami" by A.A. Navis while offering religious moderation as a solution to fanatical attitudes in religious practice. Through qualitative research in text analysis, this study explores the character of Grandfather Garin, who lives his life with a rigid and exclusive religious pattern, ignoring the social dimension of religious teachings. The results show that religious fanaticism portrayed in this short story has negative impacts on the character of Grandfather Garin, such as social isolation and lack of benefit to the social environment. This research's contribution offers the view that religious moderation, which balances worship and social responsibility, can prevent someone from harmful fanatical attitudes and encourage more inclusive and relevant religiosity in the context of a pluralistic society.
