MEMBANGUN IDENTITAS KEISLAMAN DENGAN BAHASA ARAB, MENGEMBANGKAN BAHASA ARAB DENGAN IDENTITAS KEISLAMAN

Abstract


Tulisan ini memberikan gambaran antara identitas religius, dalam hal ini adalah identitas ke-Islam-an, dengan Bahasa Arab terdapat relasi yang kuat dan saling membutuhkan. Bahwa identitas ke-Islam-an dapat diperkuat dengan mempelajari Bahasa Arab, dan sebaliknya upaya mempelajari Bahasa Arab dapat mencapai tingkat yang lebih serius dan bermakna jika dilakukan dengan motivasi dan sikap yang dibentuk oleh identitas ke-Islam-an.
Menurut Peek (2005) identitas religius seorang Muslim di Amerika secara umum terbagi menjadi tiga: ascribed identity, chosen identity, dan declared identity.Ascribed Identity adalah sebuah fase dimana seorang Muslim tidak menyadari identitas sebagai seorang Muslim. Choosen Identity adalah fase berikutnya, dimana seorang Muslim mulai memperoleh pemahaman tentang identitasnya dan melakukan upaya untuk memahami Islam, terutama lewat belajar dalam komunitas. Biasanya fase ini berawal dari ketika seorang Muslim memperoleh pendidikan yang lebih tinggi. Declared Identity adalah fase dimana seorang Muslim sangat menyadari identitas dirinya, merasa bangga dan terlibat aktif dalam memperkenalkan Islam kepada masyarakat luas serta menunjukkan upaya dalam membersihkan citra Islam yang tercoreng oleh berbagai aksi terorisme. Namun, seperti yang dituliskan oleh Peek tentang relativitas teorinya, tingkat pendidikan tidaklah memberikan jaminan untuk berpindahnya seorang Muslim dari satu fase identitas ke fase identitas lainnya.
