Tanah Air Itu Bhinneka as Youth Interreligious Dialogue and Peace Building Strategy
Abstract
Youth play a strategic role in creating a better and more peaceful world, including in peacebuilding efforts. The Communion of Churches in Indonesia (PGI) has facilitated interfaith relations through the Tanah Air Itu Bhinneka program, which aims to train young people from diverse religious backgrounds across Indonesia to become agents of peace. This article explores the program's contribution to interfaith dialogue strategies by referencing Ashutosh Varshney's theory of civic engagement. Using a qualitative analysis approach and case study method, this research reveals how interfaith civic engagement networks built through the program contribute to enhancing harmonious interfaith relations. The findings indicate that the Tanah Air Itu Bhinneka program not only empowers young people to become agents of peace but also strengthens interreligious understanding and tolerance. This article argues that the approach employed in this program can be adopted as an effective peacebuilding model and provides valuable lessons for similar initiatives at regional and global levels.
