Abstract

The focus of this article is to describe how couples from different cultures form identities in their marriages. His partner is from the Javanese and Minang tribes. Couples of different ethnic groups must be able to treat every element of culture fairly, because everyone comes with their own cultural features. In this case they need to be fair in dealing with values, norms, beliefs and also language. Associated with different cultures, interethnic couples must be able to unite two different values in their relationship. Couples must also be able to avoid misunderstandings and the emergence of conflicts due to cultural differences. They have to negotiate from all sides because marriage is not a short-term relationship, so they also have to be able to adapt to their environment as a form of negotiation between different cultural elements. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method which examines Javanese people who marry Minang people. The results show that couples with different cultures, Javanese and Minang, form their marriage identity as Javanese-Minang identity.  The things that are negotiated are the form of language used, the norms and values that they will use in marriage.
