Abstract

In the midst of high academic information needs, Padang State Polytechnic students experience difficulties in accessing information quickly, so the use of abstracts as information packaging products is a relevant solution. The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of abstracts as information packaging products to meet the information needs of sixth semester students of the Electrical Installation Engineering Technology Study Programme at Padang State Polytechnic. The approach used was descriptive quantitative with purposive sampling technique of 30 students as respondents who actively use abstracts in their academic activities. Data were collected through questionnaires and analysed by descriptive statistics using SPSS. The results showed that the majority of respondents had a high understanding of the abstract's function, with 97% stating that the abstract was sufficient to understand the main content of the article and 87% using it to determine the relevance of the article. Abstracts were also considered helpful in summarising assignments and selecting appropriate references. However, there was still a gap in understanding of the ideal abstract structure, and some students still felt the need to read the full article. These findings confirm the importance of strengthening information literacy so that students are not only able to utilise abstracts practically, but also critically assess the quality of the information presented.
