REPRESENTASI NILAI ZUHUD DALAM SYI’IR ABŪ AL-‘ATĀHIYAH (KAJIAN STILISTIKA)

Abstract

Zuhd poetry occupies a central position in classical Arabic literature as a medium for articulating ethical reflection, spiritual awareness, and critiques of worldly attachment. Abū al-‘Atāhiyah is widely recognized as one of the most prominent poets of this tradition; however, existing studies tend to emphasize thematic or moral interpretations, while comprehensive stylistic analyses of his zuhd poetry remain limited. This study aims to examine how ascetic values are linguistically and aesthetically constructed in Abū al-‘Atāhiyah’s poem through a systematic stylistic approach. Specifically, this research analyzes the poem using Geoffrey Leech’s stylistic framework, which encompasses diction, syntax, metaphor, imagination, and sound pattern. Employing a qualitative descriptive-analytic method, the poem is treated as an integrated structure of form and meaning. The findings demonstrate that the poet utilizes morally charged yet universal diction, syntactic balance that reinforces didactic intent, powerful metaphors, dense spiritual imagery, and consistent rhyme schemes that intensify the poem’s eschatological message. These stylistic features function not merely as aesthetic devices but as vehicles for profound theological and philosophical contemplation concerning life, death, and divine justice. Theoretically, this study enriches stylistic criticism in Arabic literary studies, while practically, it provides an analytical model for interpreting classical Islamic poetry within contemporary literary scholarship.
