Imlek dalam Persatuan Islam Tionghoa Indonesia (PITI) Kota Medan: Integrasi dan Akulturasi Budaya Cina dan Islam
Abstract
This article is written related to the phenomenon of Chinese New Year celebrations carried out by Chinese people who are members of the Indonesian Chinese Islamic Association (PITI) in Medan. By using case studies and in-depth interviews, this article aims to provide a more complete understanding of the Chinese Muslim community in Medan. The research method used is qualitative with an anthropology of religion approach. The results of this study found that the Chinese New Year celebration carried out by PITI in Medan is a process of cultural change between Chinese people who adhere to Islam and the Muslim community in general. With this celebration, PITI in Medan indirectly states that they are part of the "Chinese", because they believe that celebrating Chinese New Year is part of Chinese culture that has been going on for generations. Therefore, celebrating Chinese New Year means preserving culture or aspects of continuity from the cultural changes that have occurred. Furthermore, with the Medan-style Chinese New Year celebration, they want to state that they are no longer like other "Chinese" people who are used to celebrating Chinese New Year in Chinese temples, monasteries, and churches. Finally, the Chinese New Year celebration in PITI in Medan is a symbolic expression of the syncretic views of Chinese Muslims in Medan. The theoretical claim in this study that Chinese people have always received negative values from the Muslim majority is not true.
