INTEGRASI MAQĀṢID AL-SYARĪ‘AH DAN PLANETARY BOUNDARIES DALAM PERKEMBANGAN ETIKA EKOLOGI

Abstract


The accelerating degradation of Earth’s life support systemsm arked by climate instability, biodiversity collapse, and escalating pollution indicates that human activity is pushing the planet beyond safe ecological limits. While contemporary scholarship has explored Islamic environmental ethics, few studies have systematically examined the integration between Maqāṣid al-Syarī‘ah and the scientific model of Planetary Boundaries, leaving a conceptual gap in bridging normative Islamic objectives with empirical Earth-system metrics. This study conducts an integration literature review of classical and contemporary maqāṣid scholarship (al-Raysūnī, Auda, Ibn Bayyah) alongside foundational Planetary Boundaries research (Rockström, Steffen) to analyze potential points of convergence. The findings demonstrate that ḥifẓ al-nafs aligns with the climate-change boundary through its emphasis on the preservation of human life, while the contemporary expansion of ḥifẓ al-bi’ah corresponds to the biosphere integrity boundary. This integration provides a dual-layered ethical-empirical framework that strengthens both the theoretical basis of Islamic ecological ethics and its applicability for policymakers, environmental scholars, and Muslim-majority institutions seeking sustainable governance models.
