Abstract

Abstract: This study explores the career aspirations andprofessional identity construction of Islamic Psychologystudents at UIN Antasari Banjarmasin using a convergent mixed-methods design. Open-ended questionnaires were completed by205 students across semesters 2 to 14, and four focus groupdiscussions (FGD) involved 35 participants representing everycohort. Questionnaire responses were content-coded into 46thematic codes within six themes, FGD data underwent reflexivethematic analysis, and the two strands were integrated at theinterpretation stage through a joint display classifying findingsas confirmation, elaboration, contradiction, or new themes.Career aspirations concentrated on education and counseling(66.8%) and the psychologist pathway (53.7%), while familyapproval (70.7%), social benefit (62.9%), and Islam–careerintegration (62.4%) dominated students' considerations. Cross-cohort comparison revealed three salient patterns: rising interestin the government sector, an inverted-U trajectory of career-as-worship orientation peaking in semester 8, and graduallyincreasing nomenclature awareness, with semester 6 emerging asa critical convergence phase of academic, financial, andexistential pressures. Integration of the two strands confirmedmost survey patterns, elaborated career-as-worship into threedevelopmental stages of internalization, and revealedcontradictions on self-doubt and work-first intentions that thequestionnaire underdetected. Four professional identity narrativetypes were identified: Substantive Integrator, EthicalPractitioner, Da'i with Psychology Background, and MeaningfulDiversification. These findings offer a preliminary empiricalfoundation for curriculum development, cohort-sensitive careersupport services, and structural advocacy in Indonesian IslamicPsychology programs.
