Abstract

Studies on Arabic phonology have predominantly focused on Modern Standard Arabic, while systematic analyses of phonological variation in Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (‘Ammiyah), particularly in popular media, remain limited. This research addresses this gap by examining phonological processes manifested in contemporary Arabic songs. The study aims to describe vowel and consonant changes occurring in Egyptian ‘Ammiyah as reflected in the popular song Masha’er by Sherine Abdel Wahab, widely recognized through its lyric Batmaana Ansak. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected using listening and phonetic transcription techniques, followed by phonological analysis based on segmental theory. The findings reveal consistent consonantal processes, including the realization of the phoneme /q/ (ق) as a glottal stop [ʔ], the realization of /dʒ/ (ج) as a voiced velar stop [g], and assimilation within specific consonant clusters. At the vocalic level, the study identifies the elision of short vowels in open unstressed syllables and vowel shifting (imalah) involving the long phoneme /a:/ in particular phonological environments. These results demonstrate that Egyptian ‘Ammiyah exhibits systematic and rule-governed phonological patterns distinct from Modern Standard Arabic. Theoretically, this study contributes to Arabic dialect phonology, while practically it provides linguistic insights for Arabic language teaching, sociolinguistic studies, and the analysis of Arabic popular culture.
