Renza Afrilia, Iwan Kurniawan

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there is a correlation between students' self-confidence and speaking ability of eighth-grade bilingual students, semester one of MTSN 2 Tanggamus. The subject of this study was eighth-grade bilingual students’ semester one of MTSN 2 Tanggamus, consisting of 32 students with 8 males and 24 females. The type of data used is quantitative data. Data were obtained from speaking tests and self-confidence questionnaires. This study was conducted systematically by providing speaking tests and self-confidence questionnaires. After calculating the results of students' scores in speaking and self-confidence, the researcher found that students had low self- confidence with an average score of 69.03 and in speaking ability with an average score of 63.13. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient (rxy) is 0.962. This means that the correlation is very high (there is a correlation). Based on the data above, the researcher concluded that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. This means that there is a correlation between self-confidence and the ability to speak English of bilingual eighth-grade students in the first semester of MTSN 2 Tanggamus.
