The Preparation of An Arabic Teaching Book Based on The Integrated Curriculum (A Developmental Research at Cahaya Islam Institute, Payakumbuh)

Abstract

Arabic learning at Cahaya Islam Islamic Boarding School, Payakumbuh, follows an integrative approach beside the theory of unity (نظرية وحدة) to enhance students’ speaking skills. The curriculum combines language learning with religious subjects, such as fiqh, using the classical text Al-Ghayah wa At-Taqrib from the Shafi'i school. However, this text alone did not meet the learning needs of eighth-grade students, who faced challenges due to the lack of engaging and supportive teaching materials. This study aims to develop an instructional textbook that focuses on improving speaking and grammar skills through an integrative approach within fiqh lessons. The goal is to enhance students' communicative and linguistic competence in a way that reflects their real educational context. The research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which includes analysis, design, development (with expert validation), implementation, and evaluation. The sample consisted of eighth-grade female students. Data were collected through interviews, observations, tests, and questionnaires. Qualitative data were analyzed using Miles & Huberman's model, and quantitative data were analyzed using MANCOVA in SPSS 30. The results showed that the textbook reached a validity score of 83.75%, categorized as "Very Good". The trial class confirmed the book’s effectiveness in enhancing students' language skills integratively, increasing their motivation and their understanding of subject matter. The N-Gain score showed moderate improvement (56.6% for speaking and 59.5% for grammar), while Partial Eta Squared indicated a strong effect on speaking skills. However, it did not show the same for grammar, suggesting other influencing variables.
