THE INTERACTION BETWEEN CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS AND MATHEMATICAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS OF PRE-SERVICE TEACHER IN SOLVING HOTS PROBLEMS FOR DISCRETE MATHEMATICS COURSES

Abstract


This study aims to analyse the interaction between student critical thinking skills and mathematical communication skills in solving higher order thinking skills (HOTS) problem for discrete mathematic course. This research emphasizes the interaction effect between the two skills. This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed-method design involving 42 undergraduate students. Data were collected through HOTS based essay test, interviews and observations. Quantitative data were analysed using two ways ANOVA, followed by qualitative analysis to explore student thinking process. The results show that there is statically significant interaction effect between critical thinking skills and mathematics communication (p<0,05). Students with high critical thinking and high mathematical communication skills obtained the highest HOTS score of 73.21, compared to students with high critical thinking but low communication (67.57) and students with low critical thinking and communication (61.76). This is strengthened descriptively, pre-service with high level of both skills achieved the best HOTS performance. Qualitative finding indicates that pre-service are strong in interpretation and analysis but weak in evaluation and self-regulation. This study highlights that mathematical communication support and clarifies thinking process in solving HOTS Problems. Researchers recommend utilizing the results of this study in designing learning environments so that prospective mathematics teachers are able to solve HOTS problems.
