Exploring The Integration of TikTok in EFL MAterial Development for Generation Z Learners

Dian Reftiawati

Abstract

The rate at which the digital technology has evolved has changed the way that students gather information and interact with content. Although TikTok was known as an entertainment platform, it has now become a learning media that provides learning experiences with micro content which is in line with the preference of Generation Z people. Through this study, the researchers focus on how TikTok Education can be implemented in developing teaching materials that suit the Gen Z' learning characteristics. In this qualitative descriptive research design, data were collected during observations and deep-interviews of stakeholders (teachers and students), and through documentation using such fieldnotes regarding using TikTok as a school media by teachers. Applying the Miles and Huberman's model for data analysis, data reduction, data display and drawing conlcusion. The results show that TikTok is a good tool to help students improve their engagement, motivation and understanding via short, visually-drawn and interactive videos. Teachers also turn to TikTok for ideas on creating new teaching materials, video, based assignments, infographics, and bite-sized modules. However, several issues (e.g., content credibility, distraction, and potential oversimplification of complex topics) were reported. This study shows that TikTok is best used as a learning canter through itself, enhancing tens of the teaching and learning curricula implemented by generations’s Z curation for personal needs and integration by institute in curriculum.
