Abstract

Pencak Silat, as part of the Minangkabau cultural heritage passed down through generations, represents a unique intersection between cultural practices and mathematical concepts, making it a valuable subject for ethnomathematics research. While numerous studies have explored ethnomathematics in various cultural contexts, the relationship between Minangkabau Pencak Silat and mathematics education remains underexplored. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the mathematical concepts embedded in the movements of Minangkabau Pencak Silat. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving Minangkabau martial artists from different silek academy, one cultural leader, and three silek observers. The study examines a range of movements—such as step patterns, stances, strikes, kicks, elbows, and defensive techniques—analyzing them to reveal mathematical principles such as angles, parallel lines, intersecting lines, and overlapping lines. Specifically, the study identifies the eight directions of movement and four basic step patterns—straight, zigzag, triangular, and square—as well as the geometric structures found in other silat techniques. The findings indicate that Minangkabau Pencak Silat can be used as a contextual learning tool for teaching geometry, offering culturally relevant and practical examples for students. This research contributes to a broader understanding of how cultural practices can enhance learning and serves as a reference for educators seeking to integrate local cultural elements into mathematics teaching.
