CRITICAL THINKING ABILITY AND LEARNING MOTIVATION REVIEWED FROM STUDENTS' MATHEMATICS LEARNING OUTCOMES

Abstract


Critical thinking skills and learning motivation are important variabel s in improving students' mathematics learning outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to 1) determine the effect of critical thinking skills and learning motivation simultaneously on students' mathematics learning outcomes at one of the junior high schools in Kendari; 2) determine the effect of critical thinking skills partially on students' mathematics learning outcomes; and 3) determine the effect of learning motivation on students' mathematics learning outcomes. This study is an ex post facto quantitative study. The population used was all 438 seventh grade students at one of the junior high schools in Kendari. The sample consisted of 92 students selected using simple random sampling techniques. The data collection methods used were documentation, motivation questionnaires and critical thinking ability tests that had been declared valid and reliable. Data analysis methods included descriptive and inferential analysis. For inferential analysis, it consisted of testing the prerequisites for normality analysis, linearity, heteroscedasticity, and multicollinearity and testing the partial test hypothesis, simultaneous test and coefficient of determination. The results of the study showed that 1) critical thinking skills and learning motivation simultaneously influenced students' mathematics learning outcomes; 2) critical thinking skills have a significant effect on students' mathematics learning outcomes; and 3) learning motivation does not have a significant effect on students' mathematics learning outcomes.
